In Search of the Miraculous (I.S.O.T.M.) explores the magic of the intangible through the connections we form with nature and the landscape. Conceived as a site-specific work for the Alt+1000 photography festival, I travelled to La Vue-des-Alpes in the spring of 2025, where, whilst wandering through the festival grounds, I took photographs of the local vegetation and landscape. The images were then, back in the darkroom, further processed and manipulated using analogue techniques such as double exposure, inversion or hand colouring, reproduced and finally placed at their respective locations where they were taken.
In these sensory and perceptual processes, the depicted nature is transformed and appears surreal, abstract, sometimes even supernatural. The alterations to the photographic material also serve as metaphors for the sometimes violent transformations that humankind imposes on its environment.
I.S.O.T.M. seeks to depict the connections that go beyond the purely material presence of things – those discrete forces and subtle functionalities that shape the world beneath the surface: the marvellous. The images suggest a perspective that is at once psychological, political and philosophical on our parallel, invisible living spaces and co-existences. They reveal a desire to better understand interrelationships and to establish connections withthe non-material. This project forms part of the Sympoiesis series.
